It is a common practice to transition from wood flooring to alternative flooring surfaces within homes, particularly in areas where the room’s purpose varies. For instance, in entrances, kitchens, and bathrooms, materials like marble and tiles are often favored due to their moisture resistance and hardness. On the other hand, wood floors are the preferred choice in bedrooms, living areas, formal spaces such as drawing rooms, dining areas, and bars, as they provide a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
Considering the diverse flooring requirements, it becomes crucial to carefully contemplate the types of flooring transitions you wish to employ when moving from wood flooring to another type of flooring in your home. By paying attention to these details, you can achieve an elegant and refined appearance for your floor.
Let us have a look at the various options and the effect each has on the overall look and feel of the space.
Wood flooring to Marble
It is a common practice to have a high quality marble in the lobby or hallway which transitions into a wood floor in the bedrooms, living areas or formal areas. The type of transition that is best suited will depend upon the type of installation method used.
For floating installations (where the wood flooring is not glued to the subfloor below and is simply floating on top) aluminum T profiles work best in anodized finish that compliments the wood floor as well as the outside marble. Like most things, aluminum profiles also come in a variety of quality levels so be sure to take the time to understand and choose the right type as this minor detail has a big impact on the aesthetic as well as how your flooring performs.

Wood to Wood
Another situation maybe when the flooring is being continued from one room to another which are joined together such as the bedroom and the dresser.
There are two possibilities here:
- Carrying on the wood floor in a continuous fashion from one room to another without a break. This looks nice but again depends on the type of installation method used and the overall length of the floor. Your installation contractor should be able to guide you on this. - Sometimes when the room length is too long and the installation is being done with the floating method, it is technically important to create a break in between. This break can be covered using a T profile which we recommend in aluminum as stated above. In a floating installation method, the wood floor is free to expand and shrink based on changes in humidity. This freedom is crucial as otherwise any restriction may cause creaking sounds and other issues.
